Hypnosis is a perfectly natural state, and one we have experienced many times in our day to day lives. Trance states occur, for example, when we are so absorbed in a film that we forget all about our external surroundings. Sometimes we may drive from one place to another, without remembering parts of the journey.
This happens when the subconscious part of our brain takes over from our conscious brain, usually making a much better job of it! Try to consciously move each leg whilst descending stairs and you will probably fall down! Leave it to your subconscious mind, and you’ll do it perfectly without even thinking about it, literally!
The subconscious mind is similar to a computer and carries out all of our instructions very efficiently. Our emotions, desires, creativity and imagination are seated in the subconscious mind, whilst our conscious mind evaluates and manages. The subconscious not only controls our involuntary functions such as breathing and digestion, but also our habits, fears and beliefs.
